Kausaaliipäätelmä, also known as causal inference, is the process of determining whether a relationship between two variables is one of cause and effect. It is a fundamental concept in statistics, econometrics, and various scientific disciplines. Establishing causality is more complex than simply observing a correlation, as correlation does not imply causation. A correlation indicates that two variables tend to change together, but it does not specify whether one variable influences the other, or if both are influenced by a third, unobserved factor.

The goal of causal inference is to isolate the effect of a specific treatment or intervention on an outcome of interest. This often involves designing studies that minimize confounding factors, which are variables that are related to both the cause and the effect. Common methods for establishing causality include randomized controlled trials (RCTs), where participants are randomly assigned to either a treatment group or a control group. Randomization helps to ensure that the groups are similar on average in terms of potential confounders.

When RCTs are not feasible or ethical, observational studies are used. In these studies, researchers observe data without manipulating variables. Statistical techniques such as matching, regression analysis, and instrumental variables are employed to try and control for confounding and estimate causal effects. However, these methods rely on strong assumptions and can be more susceptible to bias. The challenge of causal inference lies in distinguishing true causal links from spurious associations, a critical task for informing policy, scientific understanding, and decision-making.
