Kaugmõõtesüsteeme, known in English as remote sensing systems, are technologies used to gather information about an object or phenomenon without making physical contact. These systems typically involve sensors that detect and record electromagnetic radiation reflected or emitted by the Earth's surface or atmosphere. This radiation can span various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, including visible light, infrared, and microwave frequencies.

The primary components of a remote sensing system include the sensor itself, a platform to carry the sensor, and a data processing and analysis unit. Sensors can be mounted on various platforms, such as satellites, aircraft, drones, or ground-based instruments. Satellites offer a wide coverage and repetitive observation capabilities, making them ideal for monitoring large-scale environmental changes. Aircraft and drones provide higher spatial resolution and more flexibility for targeted studies.

Data collected by remote sensing systems are processed and analyzed to extract meaningful information. This can involve correcting for atmospheric effects, georeferencing the data, and applying algorithms to identify features, measure properties, or detect changes. Applications of remote sensing are diverse and span numerous fields, including environmental monitoring, agriculture, geology, urban planning, disaster management, and defense. For instance, it is used to map deforestation, monitor crop health, assess natural disaster impacts, and study climate change. The ability to observe large areas repeatedly and consistently makes remote sensing an invaluable tool for understanding our planet.
