Katódaelemet refers to a cathode element, which is a fundamental component in electrochemical devices such as batteries and electrolysis cells. In these systems, the cathode is the electrode where reduction occurs. Reduction is a chemical process that involves the gain of electrons.

In a galvanic cell or battery, the cathode is the positive electrode. It attracts the positively charged ions (cations) from the electrolyte. Electrons flow from the anode, where oxidation occurs, through an external circuit to the cathode, where they are consumed in the reduction reaction. This flow of electrons is what generates electrical current.

In an electrolytic cell, the process is reversed. The cathode is the negative electrode, and it is supplied with electrons from an external power source. These electrons are then used to reduce ions in the electrolyte. This process is employed in electroplating, refining metals, and producing chemicals through electrolysis.

The specific material and chemical reactions occurring at the cathode are crucial to the performance of the electrochemical device. Different battery chemistries, for example, utilize distinct cathode materials (e.g., lithium cobalt oxide in lithium-ion batteries, lead dioxide in lead-acid batteries) to achieve specific voltage, capacity, and power characteristics.
