Katéterhasználat refers to the medical procedure of inserting a catheter, a thin flexible tube, into the body for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. This practice is widespread across various medical specialties. The most common application is in urinary catheterization, where a catheter is inserted into the bladder to drain urine. This is often done for patients who are unable to urinate on their own, due to surgery, illness, or injury.

Beyond urinary drainage, catheters are used in many other contexts. Vascular catheters are inserted into blood vessels to administer medication, collect blood samples, or perform diagnostic imaging like angiography. Cardiac catheters are used to diagnose and treat heart conditions, allowing for procedures such as angioplasty and stent placement. Gastrointestinal catheters, such as nasogastric tubes, can be used for feeding or to drain stomach contents.

The insertion of a catheter is typically performed by trained medical professionals. While generally safe, potential risks include infection, discomfort, and tissue damage. Strict sterile techniques are employed to minimize the risk of infection.
