Katodematerialer are substances used as the cathode in electrochemical cells, such as batteries and fuel cells. The cathode is the electrode where reduction occurs, meaning it gains electrons during the electrochemical reaction. The choice of katodematerial is critical as it significantly influences the performance, energy density, power density, and lifespan of the device.

In lithium-ion batteries, common katodematerialer include lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2), lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4), lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC). These materials are chosen for their ability to reversibly intercalate and deintercalate lithium ions while maintaining structural integrity and providing a suitable voltage. The specific composition and structure of the katodematerial determine the battery's operating voltage and its capacity to store energy.

For alkaline batteries, manganese dioxide (MnO2) is a typical katodematerial. In fuel cells, platinum is often used as a catalyst on the cathode to facilitate the oxygen reduction reaction, though research is ongoing to find more cost-effective and abundant alternatives. The electrochemical potential of the katodematerial relative to the anode material is a key factor in determining the overall cell voltage. Furthermore, the ionic and electronic conductivity of the katodematerial impacts the rate at which the electrochemical reaction can occur, thus affecting the device's power output.
