Kationinvaihtoresiinat, also known as cation exchange resins, are insoluble polymeric materials containing anionic functional groups that can exchange their mobile cations for other cations in a surrounding solution. These resins are typically composed of a cross-linked polymer matrix, such as polystyrene divinylbenzene, to which ion-exchange sites are attached. The most common types of cation exchange resins are strong acid cation exchangers, which contain sulfonic acid groups (-SO3H), and weak acid cation exchangers, which possess carboxylic acid groups (-COOH).

The process of cation exchange involves the reversible displacement of cations. For instance, in water softening, calcium and magnesium ions (hard water cations) are exchanged for sodium ions (Na+) from the resin. When the resin is saturated with hardness ions, it can be regenerated by flushing it with a concentrated salt solution, such as sodium chloride, which replenishes the sodium ions and releases the captured calcium and magnesium ions.

Cation exchange resins have a wide range of applications. They are extensively used in water treatment for softening, demineralization, and the removal of specific metal ions. In analytical chemistry, they are employed for separating and concentrating ionic species. They also find use in the pharmaceutical industry for drug delivery and purification, in the food industry for de-acidification and sugar processing, and in chemical synthesis as catalysts. The choice of resin depends on factors such as the type of ions to be exchanged, the pH of the solution, and the desired capacity and selectivity.
