Katalüsatori is a term that refers to catalysts, substances that increase the rate of a chemical reaction without themselves undergoing any permanent chemical change. In simpler terms, a catalyst speeds up a reaction. This acceleration is achieved because the catalyst provides an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy. Imagine a hurdle race; the catalyst is like a lower hurdle, making it easier for the runners (reactants) to get to the finish line (products).

Catalysts are not consumed in the reaction, meaning they can be used repeatedly. This makes them highly valuable in various industrial processes. There are two main types of catalysts: homogeneous and heterogeneous. Homogeneous catalysts exist in the same phase as the reactants, for example, both are liquids or both are gases. Heterogeneous catalysts, on the other hand, are in a different phase from the reactants, typically a solid catalyst interacting with liquid or gaseous reactants.

The importance of catalysts cannot be overstated. They play a crucial role in numerous applications, from the production of fertilizers and plastics to environmental protection, such as in catalytic converters in cars that reduce harmful emissions.
