The Kashubian language is a West Slavic language spoken by the Kashubians, a West Slavic ethnic group native to Pomerania in northern Poland. It is often considered a dialect of Polish but is recognized by linguists as a distinct language. Kashubian has a rich history and a unique set of linguistic features that distinguish it from Polish.

Historically, Kashubian was spoken across a wider area of Pomerania, but its geographical range has contracted over time due to assimilation and political pressures. Despite this, it has experienced a revival in recent decades, with increased efforts in education, media, and cultural preservation. There are approximately 100,000 to 300,000 speakers, though estimates vary.

The language is characterized by its phonetic and grammatical differences from Polish. For example, it retains some Proto-Slavic features lost in Polish. Kashubian has its own alphabet, which is based on the Latin script with additional diacritical marks. The language is taught in some schools in Pomerania, and there are radio broadcasts, publications, and cultural events promoting its use. Kashubian literature and folklore are also important aspects of its cultural heritage.
