Karystos

Karystos is a coastal town on the southern coast of the Greek island of Euboea. It serves as the seat of the municipality of Karystos, within the regional unit of Euboea in Central Greece. The town lies at the head of the Bay of Karystos and acts as the main urban center for the southern part of the island, supporting a hinterland of agricultural villages and seaside tourism.

Historically, Karystos traces its origins to antiquity as the city of Karystos, known in some sources as Castria. It functioned as a port city in classical times and later developed fortifications. A prominent feature is the hilltop fortress often called the Kastro, which dominates the harbor and reflects Byzantine and Venetian influence. The old town preserves traditional stone houses and narrow streets that bear witness to its maritime past.

Economy and landscape around Karystos are shaped by agriculture, particularly olives and vineyards, alongside small-scale fishing in the harbor. Tourism is centered on the seaside, local beaches, and the surrounding natural scenery, including hills and rocky coastline that attract visitors during the warmer months.

Administration and access: The municipality of Karystos was formed under the 2011 Kallikratis reform. The town is connected by regional road networks to other Evia towns and to the Greek mainland, with Athens International Airport representing the nearest major air gateway. Local services include markets, schools, and cultural events that reflect the town’s maritime heritage.
