Kartulipõletik, also known as potato blight, is a destructive disease that affects potato crops. It is caused by the oomycete Phytophthora infestans. The disease typically manifests as water-soaked lesions on the leaves and stems of the potato plant. These lesions can rapidly spread, leading to the death of the foliage and significant crop loss.

The pathogen thrives in cool, humid conditions. Spores are spread by wind and rain, and can quickly infect new plants or parts of the same plant. Under favorable conditions, the disease can progress from initial infection to widespread devastation within a matter of days. Infected tubers develop a characteristic brown rot, which can render them unmarketable and a source of further infection in subsequent seasons.

Historically, potato blight has had devastating consequences. The most infamous outbreak occurred in Ireland in the mid-19th century, leading to the Great Famine, which caused mass starvation and emigration. While modern agricultural practices and disease-resistant potato varieties have reduced the risk of such catastrophic events, potato blight remains a significant threat to potato production worldwide.

Management strategies for potato blight include the use of fungicides, crop rotation, and planting disease-free seed potatoes. Monitoring weather patterns and inspecting crops regularly are crucial for early detection and intervention. The development of new resistant varieties and improved disease forecasting systems are ongoing efforts to combat this persistent agricultural problem.
