Kartonkitölkkeihin

Kartonkitölkkeihin, often referred to as aseptic cartons or liquid packaging board, are a multi-layered packaging material commonly used for beverages and liquid foods. They are designed to protect the contents from light, oxygen, and microorganisms, thereby extending shelf life without the need for refrigeration. The primary component of a cartonitölkki is paperboard, which provides the structural integrity and acts as a printing surface.

Layered within the paperboard are thin films of polyethylene and aluminum. The polyethylene layers serve as a barrier against moisture and prevent the liquid from coming into direct contact with the paperboard, which would cause it to soften. The aluminum foil layer is a critical component, acting as an excellent barrier against light and oxygen. This prevents spoilage and oxidation, preserving the product's flavor, aroma, and nutritional value.

The manufacturing process involves forming the carton from a roll of this composite material, filling it with the product under sterile (aseptic) conditions, and then sealing it. This aseptic processing allows products like milk, juices, and soups to be shelf-stable for extended periods at room temperature. The triangular prism shape is a common design, allowing for efficient stacking and handling. Recycling of kartonkitölkkeihin is possible, with specialized facilities capable of separating the different material layers for reuse.
