Karhunkierros

Karhunkierros, meaning Bear’s Round, is a long‑distance hiking trail located in Oulanka National Park in Kuusamo, Finland. The route forms a roughly circular loop around the Oulanka River valley, connecting diverse boreal landscapes, from spruce forests and mires to rocky ridges and river viewpoints. The trail is about 80 kilometers in length and is typically completed in four to six days, although pace and stops can vary. It can also be tackled as a series of day trips for those who prefer shorter sections.

The terrain is varied and well marked, with sections of rocky ground, wooden boardwalks, and footbridges cross­ing streams. Hikers encounter river rapids, small waterfalls, and scenic overlooks along the route, which provides both physical challenge and rewarding scenery. The landscape changes with elevation and season, offering a mix of shade and open vistas.

Facilities and camping: The trail runs through a national park and is supported by Metsähallitus. Along the way there are several shelters (laavut) and unmanned cabins (autiotuvat) with fireplaces, and camping is permitted outside built-up areas under Finland’s Everyman’s Rights. In peak season the huts can become busy, so planning and flexibility are advised.

Season and safety: The most favorable time is summer and early autumn when trails are accessible and daylight is longer. Winters are generally unsuitable for through-hiking due to snow and ice. Hikers should be prepared for variable weather, insects in summer, and standard safety precautions, including carrying a map or GPS and informing someone of plans.
