The term is derived from Finnish words "karhennus" (roughening) and "käsittely" (treatment). Essentially, it involves creating a deliberately textured or roughened surface on a material.

The primary purpose of karhennuskäsittely is to enhance adhesion. By increasing the surface area and creating mechanical interlocking points, it significantly improves the bond strength between different materials or between a material and a coating. This is crucial in applications such as painting, bonding adhesives, applying coatings, or preparing surfaces for welding.
