Karbonsemlegesítés, often translated as carbon neutrality, refers to the state of achieving a balance between the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere and the amount removed from it. This goal is central to global efforts to mitigate climate change and limit its associated risks. Achieving carbon neutrality typically involves a two-pronged approach: reducing greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible and offsetting any remaining emissions.

Emission reduction strategies encompass a wide range of actions, including transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, improving energy efficiency in buildings and industries, adopting sustainable transportation methods such as electric vehicles and public transit, and implementing more sustainable agricultural and land-use practices. These measures aim to decrease the overall quantity of greenhouse gases released.

For emissions that cannot be eliminated entirely, offsetting mechanisms are employed. This often involves investing in projects that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, such as afforestation and reforestation initiatives, or supporting carbon capture and storage technologies. Carbon credits are a common mechanism used to facilitate these offsets, allowing entities to compensate for their unavoidable emissions by funding emission reduction or removal activities elsewhere. The ultimate aim is to achieve net-zero emissions.
