Karboksüülhappelised

Karboksüülhappelised refers to compounds containing the carboxyl functional group, which is characterized by a carbonyl group (C=O) bonded to a hydroxyl group (O-H). This functional group is often written as -COOH. Carboxylic acids are a fundamental class of organic compounds with a wide range of properties and applications.

The presence of the carboxyl group imparts acidic properties to these molecules. The hydrogen atom in the hydroxyl group is weakly acidic and can be released as a proton (H+), forming a carboxylate anion. This acidity is influenced by the rest of the molecule to which the carboxyl group is attached. Simple carboxylic acids like formic acid and acetic acid are soluble in water due to their ability to form hydrogen bonds. As the hydrocarbon chain length increases, solubility in water generally decreases.

Carboxylic acids participate in various chemical reactions. They can react with bases to form salts, undergo esterification with alcohols to produce esters, and be reduced to primary alcohols. They are also involved in polymerization reactions and are precursors to many other organic compounds.

Naturally occurring carboxylic acids are abundant in nature. For example, citric acid is found in citrus fruits, lactic acid is produced during muscle exertion, and fatty acids are components of fats and oils. Industrially, carboxylic acids are used in the production of plastics, solvents, pharmaceuticals, and food additives. Acetic acid, commonly known as vinegar, is a prime example of a widely used carboxylic acid.
