Kapillärtätheten

Kapillärtätheten refers to the phenomenon of fluid flow within narrow tubes or porous materials, driven by surface tension forces. This effect is analogous to how water can rise up a thin straw or seep into a sponge, even against gravity. The key principle behind kapillärtätheten is the interplay between the adhesive forces between the fluid and the material's surface, and the cohesive forces within the fluid itself.

When a fluid comes into contact with a solid surface, adhesion can cause the fluid to "wet" the surface. If the adhesive forces are stronger than the cohesive forces of the fluid, the fluid will spread and creep upwards along the surface. In a narrow space, like a capillary tube, the surface area to volume ratio is very high. This amplifies the effect of surface tension, pulling the fluid column upwards. The smaller the diameter of the tube or the pores, the greater the capillary rise or depression.

The height to which a liquid rises in a capillary tube is inversely proportional to the radius of the tube and directly proportional to the surface tension of the liquid and the cosine of the contact angle between the liquid and the solid. If the contact angle is less than 90 degrees (a wetting liquid), the liquid rises. If the contact angle is greater than 90 degrees (a non-wetting liquid), the liquid level will be depressed.

Kapillärtätheten is a fundamental physical process with wide-ranging implications in nature and technology. It plays a crucial role in water transport in plants, oil recovery from porous rock, the operation of inkjet printers, and the absorption of liquids by various materials, such as paper towels and fabrics.
