Kapillaarinippet

Kapillaarinippet is a term used in some contexts, particularly in earlier or less precise scientific discussions, to refer to the phenomenon of capillary action, specifically the very narrowest parts of a capillary tube where the liquid surface tension and adhesion forces are most pronounced. It is not a formally recognized scientific term in modern physics or chemistry, which prefer to use the broader and more accurate term capillary action.

Capillary action itself describes the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of, and even in opposition to, external forces like gravity. This rise or fall of a liquid in a narrow tube is influenced by the interplay between cohesive forces (attraction between liquid molecules) and adhesive forces (attraction between the liquid and the tube's walls). When the adhesive forces are stronger than the cohesive forces, the liquid wets the surface and is drawn upwards. Conversely, if cohesive forces dominate, the liquid may be depressed.

The "kapillaarinippet" concept likely emerged to describe the extreme end of this effect, focusing on the very tightest confinements where these forces are most concentrated and lead to the most significant visible manifestation of capillary rise or depression. While the term itself is not standard, the physical principles it alludes to are fundamental to understanding fluid behavior in porous materials, biological systems, and various engineering applications.
