Kantalukujärjestelmä

Kantalukujärjestelmä, also known as the base-26 numeral system, is a positional numeral system that uses 26 distinct symbols to represent numbers. In most common representations, these symbols are the uppercase letters of the Latin alphabet, from A to Z. The system functions similarly to our familiar base-10 (decimal) system, where each position of a digit represents a power of the base.

In kantalukujärjestelmä, the rightmost digit represents the value of the base (26) raised to the power of zero (26^0), which is 1. The next digit to the left represents 26^1 (26), then 26^2 (676), and so on. To convert a kantalukujärjestelmä number to decimal, one multiplies the value of each symbol by the corresponding power of 26 and sums the results. For example, if A represents 0, B represents 1, and so on up to Z representing 25, the number "BA" would be calculated as (1 * 26^1) + (0 * 26^0) = 26. If the system starts with A representing 1, then "BA" would be (2 * 26^1) + (1 * 26^0) = 52 + 1 = 53. The specific assignment of numerical values to letters can vary depending on the context.

Kantalukujärjestelmä has found applications in various fields, most notably in spreadsheet software. In programs like Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets, column headers are labeled using this system. The first 26 columns are labeled A through Z. After Z, the system cycles back to AA, AB, AC, and so on, effectively creating an infinite sequence of unique labels for columns. This system provides a way to systematically name and identify a very large number of columns without resorting to purely numerical indexing.
