Kansanlauluja, a Finnish term meaning folk songs, refers to traditional songs that are passed orally within Finnish communities. They are usually associated with everyday life rather than composed by known authors. The repertoire includes ballads, work songs, lullabies, love songs, children’s songs, and festival or ritual songs. Characteristics common to kansanlauluja are regional variation, texts shaped by local dialects and landscapes, and melodies that are often simple and memorable.
