Kanbaru

Kanbaru refers to a traditional Japanese craft involving the dyeing and printing of textiles, particularly cotton and silk. This technique is renowned for its intricate patterns and vibrant colors, often achieved through a resist-dyeing process. Stencils, known as *katagami*, are typically used to apply rice paste to the fabric, preventing the dye from penetrating those areas. Once the paste is dry, the fabric is immersed in dye. After dyeing, the paste is washed away, revealing the un-dyed pattern.

The origins of Kanbaru can be traced back to the Edo period in Japan, where it was a popular method for creating decorative fabrics for kimonos and other garments. Different regions developed their own distinct styles and motifs, contributing to the rich diversity of Kanbaru designs. Common motifs include floral patterns, geometric shapes, and scenes from nature. The skill and artistry involved in creating the *katagami* stencils and applying the paste are central to the quality and beauty of the finished product.
