Kalvopaperille, also known as the "calf paper" or "calfskin paper," refers to a type of high-quality paper traditionally made from the inner layer of calfskin, known as the *vellum*. This material was historically used for creating manuscripts, books, and other important documents due to its durability, smoothness, and ability to hold ink well. The term "kalvopaperille" is primarily used in Finnish, where it combines the words *kalva* (calf) and *paperille* (paper).

The production of calfskin paper dates back to ancient times, with early examples found in medieval Europe. The process involved carefully treating the calfskin to remove hair and fat, then stretching and smoothing it to create a thin, flexible sheet. This method was labor-intensive but resulted in a product that was far more durable than paper made from wood pulp, which became common only in the 19th century.
