Kaltsineerimine is a thermal treatment process used to remove volatile components from a substance, typically a solid material, by heating it to a high temperature in the absence of air or in a controlled atmosphere. The term originates from the Latin word "calcinare," meaning to burn or roast. This process is essential in various industries, including metallurgy, ceramics, and the production of cement.

During calcination, the material is heated to a specific temperature, causing chemical and physical changes. Water, carbon dioxide, and other organic compounds are released as gases, leaving behind a more stable and often denser solid product. For example, limestone (calcium carbonate) is calcined to produce lime (calcium oxide), a key ingredient in cement manufacturing. The chemical reaction is CaCO3 -> CaO + CO2.

The temperature and duration of calcination are critical parameters that depend on the specific material being treated and the desired outcome. In metallurgy, calcination is used to remove impurities from ores before smelting. In the production of ceramics, it helps to remove moisture and organic matter from clays, preparing them for firing.
