The fundamental principle behind calorimetry is the conservation of energy, often expressed as the first law of thermodynamics.

The apparatus used for calorimetry is called a calorimeter. There are various types of calorimeters, each suited for different applications. Bomb calorimeters, for instance, are used for measuring the heat released during combustion reactions, typically of fuels or food samples. Solution calorimeters are employed when reactions occur in a liquid phase, and they aim to isolate the system from its surroundings to accurately capture the heat transferred. The calorimeter is designed to absorb or release heat with minimal exchange with the external environment, allowing for precise measurement of the heat absorbed or released by the system under study.

The heat change (q) is typically calculated using the formula q = mcΔT, where 'm' is the mass of the substance, 'c' is its specific heat capacity (the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree Celsius), and 'ΔT' is the change in temperature. By carefully measuring the temperature change within the isolated calorimeter, scientists can determine whether a process is exothermic (releases heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat), and quantify the amount of energy involved. This information is vital in fields such as chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science for characterizing substances and reactions.
