Kallikrates

Kallikrates was an ancient Greek architect and sculptor who lived in the 5th century BCE. He is most famous for his collaboration with Iktinos on the design of the Parthenon in Athens. This iconic temple, dedicated to the goddess Athena, is considered a masterpiece of classical Greek architecture and has had a profound influence on Western architectural styles. Kallikrates is credited with overseeing the construction of the Parthenon from approximately 447 to 432 BCE.

Beyond the Parthenon, Kallikrates is also thought to have been involved in the design of the Temple of Athena Nike, another significant structure on the Acropolis of Athens. This smaller temple, also built in the Doric order, is notable for its elegant proportions and its location overlooking the Aegean Sea. While less is known about his sculptural work, historical sources suggest he was also active as a sculptor. His architectural achievements, particularly the Parthenon, cemented his reputation as one of the most important architects of the Classical period. His precise contributions to the Parthenon's design are debated by scholars, but his role in its realization is undisputed.
