Kaliumgraafiitti

Kaliumgraafiitti, also known as potassium graphite or graphite intercalation compound with potassium, is a material formed by inserting potassium atoms between the layers of graphite. This process, called intercalation, significantly alters the properties of graphite. Potassium atoms donate electrons to the graphite layers, making kaliumgraafiitti an n-type semiconductor and a superconductor at low temperatures.

The synthesis of kaliumgraafiitti typically involves reacting graphite with potassium metal, often in a solvent like tetrahydrofuran. The potassium atoms arrange themselves in specific ordered structures within the graphite lattice, leading to various stages of intercalation depending on the potassium concentration. These stages are denoted by a number, where stage 1 has the highest potassium content and stage 2 and higher have fewer potassium atoms per graphite layer.
