Kalibrert

Kalibrert is an open-standard framework for calibration of measurement systems, designed to standardize procedures, data formats, and metadata to ensure traceability to the International System of Units (SI) across disciplines. The name combines elements of calibration vocabulary with a distinctive suffix to denote a unified framework. The project originated from the Kalibrert Consortium, a collaboration of national metrology institutes and research laboratories, and began in 2015 with the aim of reducing variability in instrument calibrations.

Kalibrert defines a modular architecture consisting of a core calibration engine, plug-in calibrators for electrical, mechanical, and optical domains, and a metadata schema that records reference standards, environmental conditions, and instrument identifiers. It emphasizes traceability, audit trails, and compatibility with existing quality-management systems. Software implementations include open-source reference code in Python and C++, as well as enterprise toolchains offering certified workflows and support.

Applications include laboratory metrology, sensor calibration in automotive and environmental monitoring, semiconductor manufacturing, and calibration of medical devices. The framework has seen adoption in many universities and national labs, and has influenced regional calibration guidelines in some jurisdictions.

Limitations include the need for specialized training, initial integration costs, and reliance on the availability of SI-traceable reference materials. While popular in certain sectors, Kalibrert is not universally adopted and may require interoperability work with legacy systems.
