Kalciumaftagning

Kalciumaftagning refers to the process by which calcium is absorbed into the body. This is a crucial process for maintaining bone health, nerve function, muscle contraction, and blood clotting. The primary site for calcium absorption is the small intestine, specifically the duodenum and jejunum.

Several factors influence the efficiency of kalciumaftagning. Vitamin D plays a pivotal role, as it promotes the synthesis of calcium-binding proteins in the intestinal lining, facilitating calcium transport. Dietary intake of calcium is, of course, the source. The amount of calcium absorbed is also affected by the presence of other nutrients; for instance, phytates and oxalates found in some plant foods can bind to calcium and reduce its absorption.

The body regulates calcium levels through hormones such as parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitonin. PTH increases calcium absorption from the intestines and reabsorption in the kidneys when blood calcium levels are low. Calcitonin has the opposite effect, lowering blood calcium levels.

Conditions that impair kalciumaftagning can lead to calcium deficiencies, contributing to conditions like osteoporosis, where bones become brittle and prone to fractures. Conversely, excessive calcium absorption is less common but can contribute to hypercalcemia, which can have its own set of health problems. Maintaining adequate vitamin D levels and a balanced diet are key to optimal kalciumaftagning.
