Kalakuta
Kalakuta, commonly referred to as Kalakuta Republic, was a compound in Lagos, Nigeria, established by Afrobeat musician Fela Kuti in the 1970s. It functioned as his home, rehearsal space, and the center of his musical group Africa 70, serving as a social and political hub where music, religion, and activism intersected. The self-styled Kalakuta Republic became a symbolic flagship of Fela’s anti-establishment stance and his broader critique of Nigerian politics and society, drawing international attention to his work and message.
In February 1977, the Kalakuta Republic was attacked in a raid by elements of the Nigerian Army.
Following the raid, the estate did not regain its former prominence, but Kalakuta remained a potent symbol
