Kahtluses

Kahtluses refers to a type of traditional boat used by the Inuit people of northern Canada and Greenland. The name is derived from the Inuktitut language, meaning "little boat." These vessels were essential for the Inuit's daily lives, serving as a primary means of transportation, fishing, and whaling.

Kahtluses were typically constructed from wood, usually cedar or spruce, and were between 5 to 10 meters in length. The boats was capable of accommodating small crews and were designed to navigate the rough waters of the Arctic. They were often decorated with intricate carvings and used for ceremonial purposes.

The traditional construction methods involved sewing the frames of the boat together with whaleskin and then applying layers of wood and fibers. This process made the boats extremely buoyant and waterproof. The skin of the whales and seals was also used for protection and insulation. Kahtluses were an essential part of Inuit culture and a symbol of their resilience and adaptability.

The use of kahtluses has largely been replaced by modern boats and machines, but they remain an integral part of Inuit history and heritage.
