KIF4

KIF4 is a member of the kinesin superfamily of motor proteins. Kinesins are a large group of proteins found in eukaryotic cells that are responsible for transporting various cellular components, such as organelles and vesicles, along microtubules. KIF4 specifically functions as a plus-end directed motor, meaning it moves its cargo towards the growing end of a microtubule.

In humans, KIF4 exists as two main isoforms, KIF4A and KIF4B, encoded by separate genes. KIF4A is widely expressed and plays a critical role in several cellular processes. It is known to be involved in chromosome segregation during cell division, contributing to the proper movement of chromosomes to daughter cells. Additionally, KIF4A has been implicated in the transport of mRNA molecules and their localization within the cell, which is important for protein synthesis. It also contributes to the organization and dynamics of the cytoskeleton.

KIF4B has a more restricted expression pattern and its functions are less extensively studied compared to KIF4A. Research suggests it may also be involved in cellular transport and potentially in the development of certain tissues. Dysregulation of KIF4 family members has been linked to various diseases, including certain types of cancer and neurological disorders, highlighting their importance in maintaining cellular homeostasis and organismal health.
