Käynnistysmenetelmä refers to the process by which an internal combustion engine is started. In most vehicles, this is achieved through an electric starter motor. When the ignition key is turned or the start button is pressed, a small electric motor engages with the engine's flywheel, causing it to rotate. This rotation allows the engine's pistons to move, drawing in the fuel-air mixture. The spark plugs then ignite this mixture, leading to the engine's self-sustaining combustion cycle and thus its operation.

Older vehicles might have used a hand-crank method, where a crank inserted into the front of the engine was manually rotated to initiate the engine's motion. However, this method is largely obsolete due to its difficulty and potential for injury.

Other, less common käynnistysmenetelmät exist for specific applications. For example, diesel engines often use glow plugs to preheat the combustion chamber, aiding in ignition, especially in cold conditions. Some large industrial engines might employ compressed air starting systems. The core principle remains the same across all methods: to provide the initial rotational force needed to overcome inertia and begin the combustion process that keeps the engine running. The electric starter motor is the dominant method in modern automotive technology due to its convenience and reliability.
