Käänteistranskriptaasiksi is a Finnish term referring to the enzyme reverse transcriptase. This enzyme plays a crucial role in the life cycle of retroviruses, a group of viruses that includes HIV. Unlike typical DNA replication where information flows from DNA to RNA and then to protein, reverse transcriptase allows for the synthesis of DNA from an RNA template. This process is often described as "reverse transcription."

The enzyme is a polymerase, meaning it synthesizes nucleic acid molecules. In the context of retroviruses, the reverse transcriptase enzyme is packaged within the viral particle. Upon infecting a host cell, the virus releases its RNA genome and the reverse transcriptase. The enzyme then uses the viral RNA as a template to create a complementary DNA strand. This DNA intermediate is subsequently used to produce a double-stranded DNA molecule, which can then be integrated into the host cell's genome. This integration is a key step for the virus to replicate and produce new viral particles.

Reverse transcriptase has been a significant target for antiviral drug development, particularly for HIV/AIDS. Drugs that inhibit reverse transcriptase can block the viral replication cycle, thereby managing the infection. Beyond its role in virology, reverse transcriptase is also a valuable tool in molecular biology laboratories for applications such as complementary DNA (cDNA) synthesis from messenger RNA (mRNA), which is essential for gene expression studies and other research techniques.
