Jäähdytysnestetyyppiä refers to the classification and types of coolant used in engine cooling systems. The primary function of coolant is to transfer heat away from the engine's combustion process to prevent overheating. Coolants are typically a mixture of antifreeze and water. The antifreeze component, most commonly ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, lowers the freezing point of the mixture and raises its boiling point. Water serves as the primary heat transfer medium.

There are several common types of coolants, often categorized by their additive packages and color. Ethylene glycol-based coolants are traditional and widely used. These can be further divided into inorganic additive technology (IAT), which uses silicates and phosphates, and organic acid technology (OAT). OAT coolants use organic acids to provide corrosion protection and typically have a longer service life. Hybrid organic acid technology (HOAT) coolants combine elements of both IAT and OAT.

The color of coolant is not always a reliable indicator of its type, as manufacturers may use different colorants. However, common colors include green (often IAT), orange or red (often OAT or HOAT), and yellow or blue (can be various formulations). It is crucial to use the correct type of coolant specified by the vehicle manufacturer, as mixing incompatible types can lead to reduced performance, corrosion, and damage to the cooling system components, including the water pump and radiator. Always consult the vehicle's owner's manual for the recommended coolant specification.
