Jätteentyypeistä, known scientifically as Gigantopithecus, refers to a genus of extinct hominoids that once roamed Southeast Asia. The most well-known species is Gigantopithecus blacki, which lived from approximately 9 million to around 100,000 years ago. Fossil evidence, primarily consisting of massive teeth and a few jaw fragments, suggests that Gigantopithecus was the largest primate known to have ever existed.

Estimates for its size vary, but based on the fossil record, it is believed to have stood up to 3 meters (10 feet) tall and weighed anywhere from 200 to over 500 kilograms (440 to over 1100 pounds). Its diet is thought to have been primarily herbivorous, consisting of fruits, bamboo, and other plant matter, as indicated by the wear patterns on its teeth. The sheer size of Gigantopithecus has led to speculation, particularly in popular culture, about its potential interactions with early humans and its possible survival into more recent times, though scientific evidence does not support these theories.

The extinction of Gigantopithecus is not fully understood, but it is generally believed to be linked to environmental changes and habitat loss, possibly exacerbated by competition with other species. The limited fossil record makes it challenging to definitively reconstruct its behavior, social structure, or exact evolutionary lineage, though it is considered a potential relative of modern great apes.
