Jätteenpolttaminen, also known as waste incineration, is a waste treatment process that involves the combustion of waste materials at high temperatures. The primary goal of incineration is to reduce the volume of waste and, in many cases, to recover energy from the burning process. This energy can be used to generate electricity or heat.

Incineration facilities are designed to control emissions through advanced filtration and scrubbing technologies. These systems capture pollutants such as particulate matter, acid gases, and heavy metals, minimizing their release into the atmosphere. The ash remaining after incineration is typically inert and can be further treated or disposed of in landfills.

The process begins with waste being collected and transported to the incineration plant. There, it is often sorted to remove recyclable materials or hazardous substances that could interfere with combustion or cause excessive pollution. The waste is then fed into a furnace where it is burned at temperatures typically ranging from 850 to 1100 degrees Celsius. The heat generated boils water, producing steam that drives turbines to create electricity.

While incineration offers benefits in waste reduction and energy recovery, it also faces criticisms regarding potential air pollution if not managed properly, the cost of building and operating facilities, and the disposal of ash. Despite these challenges, it remains a significant component of waste management strategies in many countries, particularly in densely populated areas where landfill space is limited. Careful regulation and technological advancements are crucial for ensuring that incineration is conducted in an environmentally responsible manner.
