Jätteenkierrätys, or waste recycling in English, is the process of collecting and reprocessing waste materials to create new products. This practice aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators, conserve natural resources, and decrease pollution. The recycling process typically involves several stages. First, waste is collected, often separated by consumers into different bins for different materials. This collected waste is then transported to a recycling facility. At the facility, materials are sorted further, cleaned, and processed. For example, paper is pulped, plastic is melted, and glass is crushed. These processed materials are then used as raw materials in the manufacturing of new products.

Recycling offers significant environmental benefits. It reduces the need to extract virgin raw materials, which in turn saves energy and reduces habitat destruction. By diverting waste from landfills, recycling also minimizes the generation of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
