Järnkolföreningen, also known as iron carbide, is a compound of iron and carbon. The most common form is cementite, which has the chemical formula Fe3C. Cementite is a hard and brittle intermetallic compound. It plays a crucial role in the properties of steel, a widely used alloy of iron and carbon.

The presence of cementite in steel contributes significantly to its strength and hardness. However, its brittleness can also limit ductility. The amount and distribution of cementite within the microstructure of steel are carefully controlled during heat treatment processes to achieve desired mechanical properties. For example, slow cooling of steel can lead to the formation of lamellar structures of ferrite and cementite, known as pearlite. Faster cooling rates can result in finer pearlite or other microstructures containing cementite.

Besides cementite, other iron carbide phases may exist under specific conditions, though Fe3C is the most stable and prevalent in metallurgical applications. The formation and transformation of iron carbides are fundamental concepts in physical metallurgy and are extensively studied to understand and engineer the behavior of iron-based alloys. The study of iron carbides is essential for the development of various steel products, from tools and machinery components to structural materials.
