Järjestysasteikollisia is a Finnish term used in statistics and research to describe ordinal scales. An ordinal scale is a type of measurement scale where the data can be ordered but the differences between the values are not necessarily equal or quantifiable. In other words, the categories have a meaningful order, but you cannot perform arithmetic operations like addition or subtraction on the values.

Examples of data that can be measured on an ordinal scale include rankings, Likert scales, and satisfaction levels. For instance, if participants are asked to rate their satisfaction on a scale from "very dissatisfied" to "very satisfied," this represents an ordinal scale. While "satisfied" is clearly better than "dissatisfied," the exact difference in satisfaction between these two levels is not precisely known or measurable. Similarly, in a race, finishing positions like first, second, and third are ordinal data. We know first place is faster than second, and second is faster than third, but the time difference between first and second might be very different from the time difference between second and third.

When analyzing ordinal data, statistical methods that respect the ordered nature of the categories are used. These often include non-parametric tests, such as the Mann-Whitney U test or the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, which compare the ranks of observations rather than their exact values. Understanding the properties of ordinal scales is crucial for appropriate data analysis and interpretation in various fields, including social sciences, psychology, and marketing research.
