JuxDomain

JuxDomain is a proposed open standard for domain naming and resolution that aims to decouple domain ownership from centralized registrars and improve resilience and privacy in internet addressing. The project envisions a hierarchical but portable namespace whose ownership is verifiable with cryptographic keys, and a resolver protocol that can operate over traditional DNS infrastructure as well as in decentralized networks.

Origin and development: JuxDomain was initiated by the Jux Initiative, a collaboration of researchers and engineers formed in the late 2010s to explore alternatives to the conventional DNS model. The initial specification appeared in draft form in the early 2020s and has since undergone revisions focused on interoperability with existing DNS, security properties, and governance processes for the namespace.

Technology and architecture: The core components include a distributed domain registry that records ownership proofs, a cryptographic key management model for registrants, and a resolver layer that translates JuxDomain names to resource records. A compatibility bridge allows legacy DNS clients to resolve JuxDomain names by querying bridging nodes, while native clients can leverage the distributed registry directly. Privacy enhancements may include query obfuscation and selective disclosure of ownership proofs.

Status and reception: JuxDomain remains largely experimental with limited deployment.
