Jugendrates

Jugendräte, often rendered as Jugendrates in non-German contexts, are youth advisory bodies found in German-speaking environments. They exist to represent the views and interests of young people in governance and public life, providing input on policies, programs, and services that affect youth.

Typically formed at the municipal level, but with presence also in schools, districts, or regional administrations, Jugendräte bring together representatives who are elected or appointed to serve as youth delegates. Membership generally targets a broad age range within childhood and young adulthood, and participants may come from local youth clubs, student groups, or resident communities. The exact structure and size of a Jugendrat vary by locality and context.

Functions common to Jugendräte include advising elected councils and public authorities, proposing and evaluating youth-related projects, and facilitating dialogue between young people and decision-makers. They may work in coordination with a municipal or regional youth office (often termed Jugendamt in Germany) and can have formal channels to present reports, draft recommendations, and—in some cases—affect discussions on budgets for youth programs.
