Josiah

Josiah is a masculine given name of Hebrew origin. It derives from the Hebrew Yehoshiyahu, commonly interpreted as "Yahweh supports" or "Yahweh heals." The name has been used primarily in English-speaking countries and appears in religious and secular contexts. Variants include Josías in Spanish and Josias in Portuguese.

King Josiah of Judah, who reigned circa 640–609 BCE, is the best-known bearer of the name. He ascended the throne at eight and pursued religious reforms after the discovery of the Book of the Law in the Temple. His efforts centralized worship in Jerusalem and eliminated idolatrous practices. He died in battle against Pharaoh Necho II at Megiddo. His reforms are described in the Hebrew Bible and have influenced later Jewish and Christian tradition.

Several notable figures have borne the name. Josiah Wedgwood (1730–1795) was an influential English potter who founded the Wedgwood company. Josiah Spode (c. 1733–1797) established the Spode pottery works in England. In philosophy and science, Josiah Royce (1855–1916) was an American philosopher known for his work on loyalty and community, and Josiah Willard Gibbs (1839–1903) was an American scientist who helped develop modern thermodynamics and vector analysis.
