Jordpartiklars, commonly known as soil particles, are the fundamental building blocks of soil structure. They form through the weathering of rocks and organic matter, resulting in varying sizes and compositions that influence soil properties and fertility. Soil particles are typically categorized into three main types based on size: sand, silt, and clay.

Sand particles are the largest, ranging from 0.05 to 2 millimeters in diameter. They are coarse and allow water to drain quickly, contributing to well-aerated soils but often lacking in nutrient retention. Silt particles, measuring between 0.002 and 0.05 millimeters, have a finer texture than sand and retain more moisture and nutrients. Clay particles are the smallest, less than 0.002 millimeters in size, and possess a high capacity for holding water and nutrients but can become compacted, reducing drainage and aeration.

The arrangement of these particles into aggregates, known as soil structure, plays a critical role in determining soil health. Good soil structure allows for root penetration, water infiltration, and microbial activity, all of which are essential for plant growth. Organic matter, such as decomposed plant and animal residues, further enhances soil structure by binding particles together and improving water retention.

The proportion of sand, silt, and clay in a soil is referred to as its texture. Loamy soils, which contain a balanced mixture of all three particle sizes, are often considered ideal for agriculture due to their favorable physical properties. In contrast, soils dominated by a single particle type, such as pure sand or clay, may require amendments to optimize their suitability for plant cultivation. Understanding soil particle composition is vital for effective land management, sustainable agriculture, and ecosystem preservation.
