Joninnehållet refers to the amount or concentration av ions in a substance, most often in a solution. In chemistry, environmental science and related fields, it describes the dissolved inorganic ions present in water, soil leachate, biological fluids and similar media. The ion content is commonly expressed as milligrams per liter for individual ions, or as total dissolved solids (TDS) for the overall ionic content. It influences properties such as conductivity, buffering capacity, taste, corrosion risk and nutrient availability.

Measurement of joninnehållet relies on several analytical techniques. Conductivity meters provide a quick estimate of total ionic content but do not identify specific ions. Ion chromatography separates and quantifies anions (for example chloride, nitrate, sulfate, bicarbonate) and cations (such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium). Inductively coupled plasma methods (ICP-OES, ICP-MS) determine trace and major metal ions. Ion-selective electrodes offer targeted measurements for particular ions. Sample preparation, filtration and sometimes pH adjustment are common steps in analysis.

Applications and relevance vary by context. In drinking water, regulatory frameworks often specify acceptable ranges for major ions, while the overall ion content can affect taste, hardness and scaling. In soils and plant nutrition, the content and balance of ions influence fertility and structure. In biological fluids, ion content is crucial for osmotic balance, nerve function and enzymatic activity.

Units and reporting conventions vary. Ion concentrations are reported in mg/L, micromoles per liter (µmol/L) or milliequivalents per liter (meq/L), and it is important to specify the ion of interest and the method used to measure it.
