Joisting

Joisting refers to the process of installing joists, which are horizontal structural members used in construction to support floors and ceilings. Joists are typically made of wood or metal and are spaced at regular intervals to distribute weight evenly across the structure. The primary function of joists is to carry loads from the floor or ceiling above and transfer them to the supporting beams or walls.

The installation of joists is a critical step in framing a building. In wood construction, joists are often laid perpendicular to the supporting beams or walls, with the ends resting on ledgers or resting directly on top of the supporting elements. Notches or joist hangers may be used to secure them in place. The spacing of joists is determined by building codes and the anticipated load capacity, with common spacings including 16 inches or 24 inches on center.

Metal joists, such as those made of steel or engineered metal products, are also used, particularly in larger commercial or industrial buildings. These are often designed with specific profiles and connections to provide enhanced strength and fire resistance. The principles of load distribution and structural support remain the same, regardless of the material used. Proper joisting is essential for the stability, integrity, and long-term performance of any building.
