Jittertolerant refers to a system, component, or protocol that can operate correctly despite the presence of timing variations or fluctuations in the arrival of signals, commonly known as jitter. In digital communications, jitter arises from clock drift, propagation delays, or electromagnetic interference and can cause errors in data interpretation if the system expects perfectly periodic signals. A jittertolerant system is designed to accommodate a specified amount of timing inaccuracy without degrading performance or requiring retransmission.

The tolerance is usually quantified by the maximum time deviation that can be endured before packet loss or decoding errors exceed acceptable limits. In real‑time audio or video streaming, jitter tolerance may be on the order of milliseconds, whereas high‑speed serial interfaces may tolerate nanoseconds of variation. Techniques to achieve jitter tolerance include the use of jitter buffers that accumulate and reorder packets, phase‑locked loops that regenerate a stable clock from a noisy source, and error‑correction coding that allows recovery from occasional timing glitches.

Jitter tolerance is critical in applications where retransmission is costly or impossible, such as live broadcasting, satellite communication, industrial control systems, and autonomous vehicle navigation. In contrast, data links that can afford delays, like file transfer over the Internet, may use less stringent jitter handling. The concept also applies to radio frequency signals, where phase noise and Doppler shifts introduce jitter that resilient receivers must mitigate. Ultimately, designing for jitter tolerance improves reliability and quality of service in a wide range of time‑sensitive systems.
