Jimma

Jimma is a city in southwestern Ethiopia. It is the capital of the Jimma Zone in the Oromia Region and serves as an important administrative, commercial, and educational center for the area. It sits in the highlands of the country in the Gibe River basin, making it a regional hub for surrounding towns and communities.

Historically, Jimma was the capital of the Kingdom of Jimma Abba Jifar, a prominent Oromo state in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The royal period left landmarks in the city, including the Abba Jifar Palace, and influenced local culture and trade. The city later became part of the Ethiopian Empire as the nation expanded its administration into the southwest.

Geography and climate: The city lies in the highlands at roughly 1,500–2,000 meters above sea level in the Gibe river basin. It experiences a mild, wet climate suitable for agriculture, especially coffee production in the surrounding areas. The climate supports a mix of urban and agricultural livelihoods in the region.

Economy and infrastructure: Jimma's economy centers on agriculture, trade, and services, with coffee as a major regional product. The city hosts Jimma University, a major public university, and is served by Jimma Airport and regional road networks connecting it with Addis Ababa and other towns.

Demographics and culture: The population is predominantly Oromo, with other Ethiopian communities. Oromo and Amharic are widely used, and the city reflects a mix of traditional Oromo culture and modern urban life.
