Jatkuvuusyhtälöksi is the Finnish term for the continuity equation. In physics and related fields, the continuity equation is a fundamental mathematical expression that describes the conservation of some quantity. This quantity could be mass, energy, electric charge, probability, or other conserved properties. The equation essentially states that the rate of change of the quantity within a given volume is equal to the net flux of that quantity into the volume.

Mathematically, the continuity equation is often expressed in differential form. For a quantity represented by a scalar field $\phi$, the general form is $\frac{\partial \phi}{\partial t} + \nabla \cdot \mathbf{J} = 0$, where $\frac{\partial \phi}{\partial t}$ represents the rate of change of $\phi$ over time, and $\nabla \cdot \mathbf{J}$ is the divergence of the flux density vector $\mathbf{J}$ of the quantity. The divergence term describes the net flow of the quantity out of an infinitesimal volume.

In fluid dynamics, for instance, the continuity equation for an incompressible fluid simplifies to $\nabla \cdot \mathbf{v} = 0$, where $\mathbf{v}$ is the fluid velocity. This signifies that the volume of the fluid is conserved. Similarly, in electromagnetism, a continuity equation can be derived for electric charge, relating the rate of change of charge density to the current density. The continuity equation is a powerful tool for analyzing and understanding physical systems where conserved quantities are involved.
