Jalianwala
Jalianwala is a village located in the Amritsar district of the Indian state of Punjab. It is historically significant due to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which occurred nearby on April 13, 1919. The Bagh, a public garden, was the site where British troops under the command of Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer opened fire on a large unarmed crowd of protestors and pilgrims who had gathered for a festival. The exact number of casualties remains disputed, but it is estimated that hundreds were killed and many more were wounded. The incident greatly intensified the Indian independence movement and remains a stark reminder of colonial oppression. The Jallianwala Bagh itself has since been converted into a memorial site, attracting visitors and serving as a place of remembrance. The village of Jalianwala itself is a typical rural settlement in Punjab, with its economy largely dependent on agriculture.
