Jahanpanah

Jahanpanah was the fourth historic city of Delhi, founded by Muhammad bin Tughluq in 1326 AD. The name Jahanpanah translates to "Sanctuary of the World." Tughluq intended to create a capital city that would encompass and connect the existing cities of Delhi, namely Qila Rai Pithora and Siri, to provide better security and administrative control.

The city was strategically located between the older fortified cities of Siri and Qila Rai Pithora. Muhammad bin Tughluq envisioned a grand capital that would serve as a central hub for his vast empire. Jahanpanah was built on a large scale, featuring palaces, mosques, tombs, and a substantial city wall. Evidence of its layout and structures can still be found in ruins today, notably around the Hauz Khas area.

Notable structures within Jahanpanah included the Satpala (seven-story palace), the Begumpuri Masjid, and the Kalibari Temple, though many have not survived in their original form. The city was a testament to Tughluq's ambition and his efforts to consolidate power and administration. However, the city's existence as a distinct entity was relatively short-lived. Due to various political and economic challenges faced by the Tughluq dynasty, Jahanpanah eventually fell into disuse and its population dispersed. Later rulers, such as Firoz Shah Tughluq, expanded upon the existing structures and the city became integrated into the larger fabric of Delhi. Today, remnants of Jahanpanah offer valuable archaeological insights into the medieval history of Delhi.
