Jaastmesvõrgustikud, meaning "mesh networks" in Estonian, refer to a type of wireless network topology where devices connect to each other directly, forming a decentralized network. In this configuration, each device, or node, acts as a router, relaying data for other nodes. This creates multiple possible paths for data to travel, enhancing reliability and robustness. If one node fails, data can be rerouted through alternative paths, ensuring continued communication.

Mesh networks are characterized by their self-healing and self-organizing capabilities. Devices automatically discover and connect to nearby nodes, and the network can adapt dynamically to changes in its structure. This adaptability makes them suitable for a variety of applications where traditional network infrastructure might be impractical or unavailable. Examples include emergency response situations, temporary event connectivity, and extending Wi-Fi coverage in large buildings or outdoor areas.

The primary advantage of mesh networks is their scalability and resilience. As more nodes are added, the network's range and capacity can increase. The distributed nature of mesh networks also means there is no single point of failure, making them more resistant to outages compared to star or hub-and-spoke topologies. However, mesh networks can sometimes experience higher latency due to the multiple hops data may need to take, and managing a large number of nodes can be complex.
